A bad sector is a "physical" defect in the hard drive. It usually can not be
repaired with software. It can occur by giving the computer a severe jolt
while it is operating, causing the heads (which are separated from the
rotating disk by only a few microns) to hit the disk and cause surface
damage. Replace the hard drive.
