My suggestion would be to sell the laptop and buy a new one! I am glad
you decided to buy AMD, but they do not make any socket A cpu's
anymore. Also what mother board does your laptop comes with I have the
PCG-FX215, which use's the VIA Kt 133 chipset which is not known to be
the best. Also their is a question about the cpu being mounted directly
to the board, or if it's in a socket. I have had mine apart to clean a
fan, but I did not go that far into it to check.
One other thing that might be important is the fact that even if you do
get a new cpu, which might require a bios update. Some of those early
Duron chips did not support the newer features of later chips, and such
things as battery life suffered. My laptop on a good day with both
batteries would get at max 2 hours of run time, right now I use it as a
RC5-72 machine leave it on as much as possible hooked up with the AC
cord. It has Gnu/Linux on it right now, is pretty snappie as is, If
your looking for a good speed increase I would consider Linux, it works
great. It's better than windows me, which came with my laptop, and had
a coupon for xp home which I did not use, their were driver issues and
a bios update as well.
You can pick up a good AMD Athlon 64 laptop for a good price, so if you
really need a faster laptop with better battery life I would consider
one of those. MSI makes a good one for as little as 800 dollars, so
does some of the other big MB companies. My wife likes her Centrino
based laptop, the best thing about that one is its battery life, can
get up to 4 hours pretty easy, and if you push it 6. One problem right
now is it's unlikely you will be able to play H264, or .ts files with
it as it's just not fast enough. It is a 1.6 gig Pentium M chip, which
you think would be able to do the job. Nope not fast enough, even has
384 megs of memory. Right now I doubt a lot of laptop will be able to
play 1080i streams without crying uncle. I think it is mostly a
software codec problem, as quicktime plays like crap, as well as media
player.
So go give Gnu/Linux a try for a sweet setup, I was really surprised at
the speed up it gave my laptop.
