I would say there is a problem with the PnP or ACPI component of the gateway
BIOS that reports two floppy controllers. If there is a "plug&play OS" setting
in the BIOS disable it. Do you have latest BIOS?

PS, there is only one floppy controller when you have two drives installed.

| I have seen this posted before and there was no reply... Why wouldn't anyone
| reply?? It seems that Gateway machine have a problem with Win2K.

| Here is the previous post

| "Just did a clean install of Win 2KPro on a 1999 Gateway 450 desktop.
| Very odd problem, Windows lists two Floppy Disk Controllers that are
| using the same resources so they are conflicting each other and
| neither are available, thus no floppy available. There is only one
| floppy disk installed in the computer.
|
| If I uninstall one of the floppy disk controllers, the other becomes
| available with no conflicts and the floppy disk is usable again. But
| when I reboot it finds new hardware and installs the second controller
| again, creating the same conflict.
|
| I have tried removing both and restarting, I get the same result. Is
| there a different bios setting for floppy with Win 2K vs 98?"

Yes, I have upgraded to the latest BIOS version from Gateway, Disabling
either controller in device manager removes the conflict and then installs
the Floppy disk drive... until it is restarted and then it starts all over
again. No, there is not any PNP OS aware options. I believe that the
motherboards for these models is not Win2K compliant and Gateway won't admit
it.
