They're pretty fancy. Least what I'd expect to study up on if I
watched TV anymore (so much garbage to wade through for a few channels
of occasional interest) -- I'd also want multiple simultaneous channel
boxes on a (large LCD) display. Say 9 or 12 channels. Recording,
I've done it with software -- pretty easy to screw up, though can be
done reasonably right with care. What was reasonable then wouldn't
compare to present offerings, hardware-encoding tuner cards and an
overall better-built system that could better approach professional
quality at a reasonable outlay given the right abilities.
Trick's knowing the skew into professional gear, which can tend
exponentially into niche pricing. An expensive "hobby" considering an
entry level music video might run $350K and still be shot on film
emulsion.
