NTBackup should give you the option to compress the data, or use hardware
data compression. Software compression is usually better, while hardware
compression is faster. Did you look at all your options? Is the data you are
backing up already compressed at the file level?

If the device (Travan thingy) is supported under Veritas (they actually make
the NTbackup program, btw) or Arcserver, or whatever..... you can give those
a try too.
