This happens when you do a system restore? There is a possibility that the
system restore files became corrupt - this sometimes happens even without
your PC being updated.

Because your PC is working fine the easiest thing to do is to disable system
restore to clear out all of the old restore points and then enable it again
and create a new restore point. By the looks of thing the old restore points
are not much use to you.

While system restore is useful if you need to go back just a few days or so,
it is actually better to invest in imaging software, such as Acronis True
Image 2009, which allows you to image the whole of your hard drive, either
to a set of DVDs or a removable hard drive, if you have one. If you get any
problems you can then simply re-image the drive back and you will be up and
running quickly. Obviously you need to keep the image up to date.
