Master Prometheus - Thank you for replying. I now know it
is called a tilde. I have tried deleting it several times
and then it returns again. How can I ensure it remains
deleted? I only ask because it is a nuisance.

Hi,

It will re-appear everytime there is a modification in your address book.
For the time being there is no cure. But maybe some tricks like making it
read-only and hidden could prevent it from reappearing.

And those tips are from an MVP, you may want to try these :
<begin copy & paste>
Try this :

In your OE shortcut, cope the 'Target' field into the 'Start in'
field,and remove the '\msimn. exe' at the end

If that doesn't stop it, then turn off 'Compact all folder in the
background' - and compact manually, and frequently, using 'Compact all
folders', while offline, and with the focus on Outlook 'Express'

Unfortunately, there's no way to completely 'kill' it - but these
should at lest reduce the annoyance factor!
<end of copy & paste>
