re space on hard drive

i have recently upgraded from Windows98 to XP Pro. I have downloaded all my old programs which took up about 6.5Gb plus I have downloaded the service pack for pro but my HDD is now stating that I have used 30.5Gb of space how do I chheck what has gone wrong?
