From a SAMBA website:
Windows 2000/XP
NOTE: You must have Administrator privileges on your machine to be
able to apply this patch.
Go to: Start - Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local
Security Policy
Expand the Local Policies tree.
Click Security Options.
Find Send unencrypted password to connect to third-party SMB servers
in the list in the right pane (six up from the bottom).
Double-click on it.
Click Enable.
Click OK.
Close everything and reboot.
If you return to the Security Options folder after rebooting, the
Local Setting and Effective Setting columns should say Enabled.
