I have succesfully rebooted the SBS2000 server in directory repair mode. The server is configured with 2 NIC's, Internal network and External (Internet). The internal is configure with no default gateway and the primary DNS is pointing at the internal network address. The external NIC is configured with the default gateway pointing at the router and the primary DNS pointing at the internal NIC address (as per microsoft documentation). I have checked the binding order, internal NIC followed by external NIC. However, I am unable to run the ICW (during directory repair mode). When I reboot the server it still hangs during the 'applying computer settings' phase. Its now 10:00pm local time, I will remain on site until this problem is resolved. The users are due to arrive at 7am ! Obviously I require URGENT assistance ! Any help would be greatfuly received.

Hi Marina, thanks for getting back to me.

Should I be able to run the ICW while in 'directory repair' mode ? The machine takes an age to boot up in this mode, with a whole bunch of services not running. I have left the server to boot overnight in 'normal' mode. If it fails to boot by morning I will run in 'directory repair' mode and post the results of the icw and ipconfig commands. I have checked one of your previous postings with regard to DNS errors, when i run the DNS tests the recursive test is failing. Any ideas what this might indicate

Hopefully speak to you soon, I appreciate you helping me.

Hi Idris,

I don't think so. You will really have to get it up and be able to get the
desktop. Check the nicsettings:
Internal should be something like:
IP: 192.168.16.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
GW: blank
DNS: 192.168.16.2

External:
IP: 10.0.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.3
DNS: 192.168.16.2

Check bindingorder: Network Connections, Advanced, Advanced, and make sure
the internal nic is on top.
On the external nic only TCP/IP should be bound. Advanced, DNS-tab, make
sure 'register in DNS' and 'primary suffix' are NOT checked.
External nic, TCP/IP, DNS-tab, make sure 'register in DNS' and 'primary
suffix' are checked.

DNS-server: make sure it is only listening to the server-IP (192.168.16.2)
and put the ISP-DNS-numbers in the tab Forwarders. On the properties of the
Forward and Reverse lookup zones, make sure that 'allow dynamic updates' is
set to yes.

Post in the microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000 newsgroup tomorrow if
you want to get the proper and fast answers. (I won't be around tomorrow
during the day.).

It can take an awfull long time to boot in normal mode if the nics ares not
set right. You can't repair this in any other way I'm afraid.
