Hi,

My son sorted the problem himself by booting into the recovery console on
the windows xp install disk, he then deleted the old boot.ini file and used
the command 'bootcfg /rebuild' to search the hard disk for windows
installations. Once it had found the winxp installation he told it to write
a entry into a new boot.ini file with the OS load identifier set to 'Windows
Xp Home Edition' and boot parameters to '/fastdetect'. Next he entered the
two commands 'copy E:\i386\ntldr c:\' and 'copy E:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
where 'E' is the cd drive. he then simply rebooted the pc and windows xp
loaded as it always had done.

So far no problems or error messages...

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Cool solution - please don't tell us your son is 13 years old - he should
be hanging out on this board. The key to making this work was copying the
XP ntldr file. Vista bypasses boot.ini no matter what it says and uses a
file called Bootmgr.exe - if this file is still on your HD, you should
delete it.

Cheers,

Andy

I saw no bootmgr.exe but saw bootmgr
so instead of deleting it, i renamed it to 0bootmgr
and now my machine won't boot up anything.

i am stuck...
if i put in a Win XP installation CD to do a clean install, the
installation problem will blue screen.

I copied E:\i386\ntldr c:\' and 'copy E:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
> where 'E' is the cd drive. then I rebooted my pc and windows xp gave me an error that says....... windows could not start because of an error in the software. please report this problem as: load needed dlls for kernel... please comntact your support person to report this problem...

all of this started when vista failed to recognise my (DDO) dynamic drive
overlay software, after the install of vista when my computer rebooted i
noticed it was missing i finished the setup then rebooted, i tried to boot
win xp pro, ntldr is missing, then i booted vista worked just fine, so i
decided to reinstall my (ddo) big mistake neither os worked, after removing
(ddo) vista worked once again, i figured what the hey i formated the
partition vista was installed on, then i ran recovery console from my xp disk
i tried the fix mentioned and after rebooting i got that error is there
anyway i can run system restore from recovery console, if not what can i do
to get my computer to run xp again without formating, please help
