The simplest way would be to disable it via the Control Panel /
Administrative Functions.

I need to remove it ... the application for which it was created won't
work if I don't. There must be a command or API to remove a windows
service?

You have a few options:
- Follow the advice given in Michael Holz's post
- Delete the service from the registry
(HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
- Bone up on the technology. These links might help:
