So, it seems that the only benefit I made trying to figure out what's
wrong with this is that somehow the Generic volume fails to be
assigned to digital camera device.

Moreover, once or twice I had experienced that the drive letter
remained in My Computer, although I had disconnected (using Safely
Remove Hardware) the camera. The drive had red question mark notifying
me that the drive is no longer valid. As I said, this happened once in
about 30 times I've been transferring the files from the camera.

Combined with this fragment of Shell Hardware Detection logfile:

~0x000003E4~[0000]Processing Interface Arrival Event:
DBT_DEVTYP_DEVICEINTERFACE + DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL,
{53F5630A-B6BF-11D0-94F2-00A0C91EFB8B}
~0x000003E4~[0000]Processing Interface Arrival Event:
DBT_DEVTYP_DEVICEINTERFACE + DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL,
{53F5630D-B6BF-11D0-94F2-00A0C91EFB8B}
~0x000003E4~[0310]Cannot find hardware device for this volume -> No
Autoplay!

....it seems that the third CLSID shown doesn't resolve properly the
DeviceInst key and that something is wrong with assignment of camera
volume.

When I delete the drive letter assigned to camera volume, in Computer
Management/Disk Management, then remove the camera, and after
reconnecting the camera manually reassign the letter - the wizard
shows up and ShellHWDetection autorun.log file shows no erratic
behavior. However, this only happens ONCE, if I disconnect/reconnect
the camera later, AutoPlay again doesn't work!

I must note that this isn't the only camera/USB removable device I
have been using on my computer. I have connected several other
cameras, three Olympus digital cameras (one C-330Zoom and two C-4000
Zoom) with 4 different SmartMedia cards and one SONY DSC digital
camera. Also, I've been using few "USB sticks". All of the cameras
have left some "trails" in my registry in the
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum key, but no keys that I saw seem to
be invalid. I can't actually remember when the wizard failed to show
up for the first time.

Comparing the hardware registry keys with the ones on my laptop, where
AutoPlay works fine, using the exact same camera and SmartMedia card
(even the cable) didn't help me at all since the keys are all the way
same and valid.

All I could see is that generic storage volume somehow behaves strange
and doesn't allow AutoPlay to process it. I have no conclusion or
solution, but I hope I helped someone in MS to solve this annoying
problem.
