If they are connected via USB, it sounds like your USB ports are going to
sleep to save power. Disable that feature in Device Manager.

I'm not using the USB port, I'm using the parallel port.

And does this problem stop if you use the USB port?

To use the USB connection on the printer, you have to install the printer
software first, then connect the printer to the USB port when the software
tells you to do so.

What do you have for the settings for the LPT port in Device Manager.
(sorry, I can't tell you what they should be, my notebook has no parallel
port!)

Can you be more specific about what you'd like to see? I brought up the
device manager and the LPT port; there are General/Driver/Details/Resources
tabs.
