You can delete the i386 directory as it only serves as a local set of source
files for XP upgrades.

The boot dorectory contains your MUIs, if you aren't plannng in switching
languages then delete all subfolders except for the language you're using
and leave the files on the root in place. This will only buy you avout 12mb
though so why bother.

The $* directories were used as a workspace for the upgrade, you can delete
them if you'd like.

Look in the root of your windows directory for any lingering XP upgrade
folders again, statring with $*, they can go as well.

Hi,

Take ownership of them. Right click the folder, select properties. On the
security tab click advanced. On the ownership tab, click edit. Make sure you
check the box for subcontainers, and change the owner to your user. Apply/ok
your way out. It will take some time to propogate to all affected folders.

Open Computer form the start menu and then right click the boot drive.
Select "properties" and then select "Disk Cleanup". That will prompt you for
elevation and let you remove the $ directories generated by the install.
You'll see one item that most likely will be multiple gig in size, and it's
title should indicate it's the directory(s) in question.
