You don't mention the version, but it's
possible that the password is blank. It
usually is, unless you specified a
password or set one (the PID you entered
is not the password).

It isn't altered. When you implemented
security you created a new workgroup
file. Access made this the default
workgroup to use for all sessions. If
you use the workgroup administrator to
rejoin the standard system.mdw, you
won't get the security login. Access
always uses security - it will use the
default workgroup file (unless you
specify a different one in a shortcut).
The workgroup file is used for the
session, regardless of the database
used.
