re-installation problem

I have a laptop that has been re-formatted and only a recovery disc (XP pro
sp1) if I was able to borrow a (XP pro sp1) or older windows full instalation
disc would I still be able to use the exsisting licence key on the bottom of
the laptop. any help greatly appreciated

NO. The existing licence key "sticker" is geared towards requiring a
HP install or recovery system.

That key won't work for Retail CDs, if that's what you mean by "full
installation disk". If it is an OEM CD then the key would work, but
would require a call to MS for activation. In either case, you would
need to have drivers downloaded and ready.
