Thanks again for coming back so quick. I didin't mention
the drive because it's so ordinary - IDE IBM deskstar UDMA100 - but your last answer got me thinking, and I might just fit a separate PCI IDE controller and see if that helps.

I get a feeling from looking round the Internet
that my problem, though not uncommon, can only be solved by suck-it-and-see hardware changes.

Yes you'll need the controller driver for the UDMA100
