Some of our customers are using GPO's to deploy software after evaluating
leading software deployment solutions including SMS.
The main benefit of deploying software using GPO's is that it is policy
based. Once the targets are defined, then new users or new computers
automatically get software based on where they are in the OU and based Group
membership. With other solutions, you have to update the collections
manually.
The other advantage is that policies are applied at every logon/startup.
This means that if the package is not successfully installed for whatever
reason, it is retried the next time the policies are evaluated. With a
solution like SMS, you would have to create a new collection of failed
installs and retarget the package.
Some of the disadvantages are absence of success/failure status of the
package installs, licensing information, etc. These can be overcome easily
using third party solutions.
