Hi RedShadow,

Click Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
Scroll down to "Cryptographic Services", double click it and
change Startup type to: Automatic and click the "Start" button.

The Cryptographic Services confirms the signatures of files, if it
is stopped or disabled Windows Logo files will not be installed.

You probably disabled that service while "tweaking" XP using
well intended but bad advice from some site or magazine. d;^)

Right-click My Computer and select Properties, or go to Start/Run and type
in "winver" without the quotes.

Okay, glad to have that confirmed.

You're downloading this file from Windows Update, or are you downloading
from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
If this is the URL you've used, I would suggest you clear your Internet
cache, clear out your C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and try
redownloading it.

Make darn sure you've got nothing, absolutely nothing running in the
background. That includes open programs, any third-party anti-virus or
firewalls (Norton or ZoneAlarm, etc.). These programs don't shut down
totally when you click on the icon in the Systray and select "exit," they
only leave the icon representing action and continue working on the system
in a hidden manner.

Hi RedShadow,

Well according to Mark Salloway from http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/ :
You may need to rename a folder called catroot2 in
c:\windows\system32 (Must be logged on with an administrator account when
you do this). This folder contains catalog files which if become corrupt
will make some updates will fail to install properly (Such as DX9a).

Hope that helps

Still won't install. I got the same logo testing error I've gotten since
the start. I closed every program, uninstalled my antivirus(never did
anything anyways). I redownloaded several times, made sure Cryptography
Service was running. Nothing seems to be working.

Try following Jimmy's relay of the advise from Mark Salloway to rename the
catroot2. Maybe that'll kick start the sucker.

I checked his site and followed his instructions regarding the DirectX
9.0a. For some reason I can't seem to accesss the Windows Update site, I
reset the security levels and it still wouldn't let me continue. The
rest of his instructions didn't help.

Hi RedShadow,

There seems to be an endless amount of headaches for you there,
sorry to hear that. Here's what I would do: Scan for virii on your
system; Run the disk maintenance wizard from the drive properties;
Run msconfig and try a selective startup to disable Antivirus and any
other programs that may be interfering; Update Internet Explorer 6
to SP1 at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...p1/default.asp
Reinstall XP over the existing installation to replace your current
system files; contact the Microsoft Direct X newsgroup for suggestions.

Good luck in your quest RedShadow, hope the end is near! :-)
