Hard to be sure given you comment about the visible damage
in the hole in the socket that the cpu pin goes into.

The concern I have is that he said there was noticeable corrosion on
that one pin and that may have been the cause of the failure. Even if
it works, whatever contaminants are left in that pin hole could
encourage corrosion in the new CPU, and he'd be back where he started
after a while.
