I know it will sounds silly but mybest advise to you is to back up your data
write down the apps you need and do a clean install then reload your apps.
It will save you time in the long run. My upgrade, which i only did as a
test took over 4.5 hours A clean install is about 30-40 on my machine. I
could have rebuild in less time than the upgrade.

Hi,

Looks like it was seeking input from the unattend file, are you using one?

Many of the Dell's I've seen encountering issues with Vista have two
problems: a) they need a BIOS update and b) the video has some proprietary
problems that aren't addressed by standard drivers from the manufacturer of
the card.

I'm not using a unattend file. Just regular upgrade. I've also updated the
BIOS to the latest version for Vista. I have to figure out whats causing
this!

Hi,

Use a third party tool to carve out a separate partition, then install Vista
cleanly to it. If it is successful, then the hitch is something in the XP
installation that is interfering. If it is not, then you have a hardware
issue and, as mentioned, it could be BIOS, video, or any other part of the
system. The solution there is to start trimming until you isolate it.

Hi,

Although it may have worked on an identical machine, you may have faulty or
flakey hardware on this one. XP is fairly tolerant of that, particularly if
the OS is already installed. I would still recommend a test install to this
system.

As to XP interfering, try putting it in diagnostic mode to limit background
processes (msconfig/general tab).

Hi,

It should, it's still a normal startup, just limits the number of background
processes to only the essential ones.

That did it! I selected not to run the startup options, and it installed
