I guess it's a popular topic, and probably one that causes heated [sorry -
that really was unintended] debate due to brand-loyalty, but...

I'm not really an overclocker, so I'm not looking for massive throughput,
but I am looking to reduce the *noise* generated by my AMD64 3200+ based
system.

Water cooling is out, as is fiddling with controls, though fans that vary
their speed automatically are fine. Oh, nothing too heavy as the motherboard
is mounted vertically. I'd prefer an integrated HS/F solution, but if I have
to shop around for separates then fair enough.

Pointers to comparative reviews that actually give dB figures welcome.

I have an AMD64 2800 o/c to 2.4 GHZ with a Thermalright xp-90 heat sink
and an 80mm Panaflo at 5-7 volts. The Panaflo at this voltage pushes
less than 20 CFM but its very quiet (less than 20db). At this level you
probably will notice more hard drive and/or p/s fan noise.

The cooling at this low CFM is sufficient for the o/c AMD64:
At idle the temps are about 20 C over ambient and at full load i have
the m/b temp control circuit speed up the Panaflo to keep the temps
in the range 55-60 C

I have been running this setup for 4 months and its perfectly stable on
the DFI nf3 250gb m/b.

Replace the 70x15mm stock fan with a 70->80mm fan adapter ($3) and a low
speed 80x25mm fan ($2). Won't be able to hear it over the other system
noises.
