we had a windows 2000 network, 2 windows 2003 servers as domain controllers
with one an exchange server, and a windows 2003 server that was not a domain
controller, just a member server.

one of the windows 2000 servers was running exchange 2000, and we finally
decided to move to exchange 2003. so we purchased Windows 2003 server and
Exchange 2003.
we did the following steps:
1.. adprep /forestprep from Windows Server 2003 CD on Windows 2000 server
that holds the Schema master FSMO role
2.. adprep /domainprep from Windows Server 2003 CD on Windows 2000 server
holding the PDC Emulator FSMO role
3.. setup /forestprep from the Exchange Server 2003 CD on the Windows 2000
server that holds the Schema master FSMO role
4.. setup /domainprep from the Exchange Server 2003 CD on a Windows 2000
server holding the PDC Emulator role
we installed windows 2003 and exchange 2003 on the new server and exchange
2003 is working fine.

my question is this: since it is not recommended to make the exchange
server a domain controller, what steps do I need to go thru to promote the
pre-existing windows 2003 server from member server to Domain Controller?

Hello Gary,

If you only will promote the 2003 member server to DC, just check that it
is pointing to the actual DNS server and run dcpromo. The schema in the domain
is prepared, so normally no problem. But it sounds, that you also like to
demote the DC/Exchange 2003 to a member server if the new DC is running?

Best regards

just promote it....

make sure the following has been configured prior to the promotion:
* point it to DNS servers
* site, subnet, site link if it is in another location

after promotion make it a GC if you only have 1 domain.
