When using ptree from command line to kill process. I get
error of ptree server not found. can someone tell me what
is that referring to.

I know it doesn't address your question, but you might be better off
with the PS suite of tools from sysinternals.com

OP
Good (free) tools there.

Both pslist.exe -t
and ProcessExplorer (GUI) offer "tree" views.
pskill.exe is the simplest (Sysinternals) tool to kill a process.
