Problems copying files from FAT to NTFS

My Win 98 laptop recently failed and I had the entire
harddrive backed up onto two DVDs by a local technician
with the hardware capability to do so. Now, I am trying
to copy files and folders from the DVDs to a Windows
laptop, and many of them are not transferring.

The cause SEEMS to be due to the length of the file name.
Since I did not due the backup, I do not know what
settings were used (i.e. ISO), but I was told that they
used standard ISO with Joliet enabled to maintain the
original directory/folder/file name length.

I am able to transfer the files to the old Windows 98
laptop (barely) and open them there, but I am not able to
transfer them to the Windows XP laptop.

Is there anyone out there with some ideas?

I can be reached at (E-Mail Removed).

By the way... the full error reads:

"Cannot copy <file name>: Cannot read from the source
file or disk"

I also get:

"Cannot copy <file name>: Data error (cyclic redundancy
check)."

This is probably related to the conversion from FAT32 to
NTFS.

Thanks!!!!

Use a utility to scan the disk for read errors
Nero has CDSpeed for Cdr (scandisc and quality check tests ) free download
HERE (http://www.cdspeed2000.com)
There might be a specific testing utility for DVD

Thanks for your help. I downloaded Nero CD-DVD Speed, and
that didn't help, as I ended up with the following error:

[19:37:32] Error - UNRECOVERED READ ERROR

Thoughts?

Save yourself a lot of heartache and time.

Call up the 'local technician' ask him to 'restore' the file he backed up.
If he can't ask him for your money back as the work he did is useless.

For the future, do not use 'proprietary' backup utilities without a
documented restore proceedure and / or disk.

May I recommend that you use the followinf Proceedure.
Obtain by legal methods Norton Ghost.
Create a partition on your Hard Drive, or use another Hard Drive if you have
two.
Intall Ghost and Create an 'Image File' of your total System Disk [or
partition]: that Image will be created into a new folder on the 2nd Partition
or Hard Drive.
When you initiate this process, Ghost will create a Bootable Floppy Disk.
Once finished, it will reboot, run in DOS mode, complete the Imaging and
reboot to XP. This takes 1/2 to 1 hr.
Now you have a 'Backup' of EVERYTHING, such that you can rebuild your system
environment in <1 Hr. ABout the time it would take to reinstall XP, so you
save all the time for copying data and reinstalling applications, inetrnet
settings, passwords etc. Yes it saves hours.
One can then use their CD-RW or DVD-RW and copy the image file as a second
level of security to Optical Media.

Should you need to rebuild your System, then boot off the Floppy and
'Backup' your imaged file from HDD to HDD. Should the Image file on HDD be
delete or the HDD damaged, then you have the CD / DVD to use.

Now you won't have an image / backup that is unrecognisable and uless as
..... on a bull.

I think it is likely the cd media (with the data) is faulty. You
said you barely read it into Win 98, meaning there were many re
reads and so slow writing to your win98 pc from the media.

As the other posters have stated (and what I thought initially) is there is
an error on the data cd. Since you paid for the service then follow up on
the suggestion to have them do it again.
There are utilities to recover data but this was a service you hired so they
should do it properly.
The content that poster Bar relayed is the routine to use in the future.
