I'd like to find some information on how to correctly
setup a wireless NIC on XP when a dialup connection is
used for internet access.
PROBLEM:
The original network consisted of an XP (SP1) workstation
with a dialup connection for the internet and a NIC100TX
connection to an XP notebook for ICS and file sharing.
This arrangement worked fine. However, replacing the
NIC100TX with a wireless 802.11g NIC caused internet
connection failure. The problem seems related to DNS
settings since pinging works fine, but the computer is
unable to resolve names, i.e., IE6 returns "unable to
display page". Different TCP/IP settings have been tried
following general MS KB articles on network
troubleshooting (binding order, gateway, etc). No luck.
Replacing the wireless NIC with a different make and even
removing it altogether did not resolved the problem. The
only way to get the system running again was to do a
system restore prior to the wireless NIC installation.
QUESTION:
What would cause this type of DNS problem with a wireless
NIC but not with a 100TX NIC? Why would the problem
persist even after the wireless card and driver have been
removed from the system? Are there any KB or other sources
of information covering this type of problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.
