I recently upgraded to XP Home Edition from Windows ME. My Dell computer
came with Microsoft Works Suite software installed which included something
called Works Spreadsheet that seemed like a type of Excel. When I try to
open a file saved in Works Spreadsheet I now get an error message saying
"application error, the application failed to initialize properly". Would
anyone please have a suggestion for what I need to do to be able to
successfully open this old file? I tried opening it with Excel but it only
gave me parts of the data. Thank you!

Just because Microsoft markets Works and Office, it does not
necessarily mean that the contents from one might open OK in
the other. Sometimes they do, if they are the same product in
each suite. But not this time. Return to the original Works
spreadsheet file and try to save it as an Excel file. If not
possible, then try to save it as a *.csv file. Excel, of course,
will open its own file type as well as a *.csv file.

Re-install Works. The Works cds/dvd came with your pc if purchased directly
from Dell.

If you performed an in-place upgrade from an earlier edition of
Windows, and Works was already installed, you'll likely have to repair
or reinstall it, so it can add the necessary additional functions needed
for use on a multi-user OS. It may be sufficient to simply insert the
respective installation CD and select the "Detect and Repair" option.
