The icon is based on the Opens With option. If you want to open it with
another application, you can right-click on the file, go to proerties and
click the Change... button. Otherwise, you can change the icon associated
with Excel itself, which means all files that open with Excel will have the
new icon.

Hi Sean,
how do you change the icon associated with excell?
And will this mean all the excell files on that computer will have a
different icon?
Thanks,
RR1

My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types.

Scroll down to Excel Workbook(xls or xlsx)

Hit "Advanced" then "Change Icon"

This will be a global change for all Excel files/

Hi,
thanks GORD, works just fine.
Well done to you.
I don`t suppose there is a way of just changing the icon on just a few
select excell files is there?
Thanks again.

You could change the extension of those files to some other unused three
character string, like "excel file.EXL" and then follow Gord's directions below
to change the icon for that extension.

Only if you have different extensions (.xls vs. .xlsx). Same as below, but
pick your icon for each.
