Initially when I downloaded a SMF it would play automatically on Windows
Player. However since installing Cubasis (V5) selected SMFs are played thru
that and it is more time consuming. Is there a way to by-pass Cubasis?

Restore the association of Windows Media Player with extension MID.

Of course you can than still use Cubasis to open them, either from within
that software or from the context menu of Standard MIDI Files in the
Explorer ("Open with...").

By the way,
I'd associate any extension with some viewer (like IrfanView) rather than
with extensive software: in order to view (or hear) them sooner and avoid
modifying them accidentally.
