You should go into your local shop with a pack of your favorite or
reccomended photopaper, jack in your digital camera, and see for your
self. Most stores are agreeable to this so long as you leave your
prints there... you get a clue and they get free prints to show others.
Do evaluate the ip6600D as well, less inks but smaller ink drops.
The ip8500 is a pixma sporting duplex and cd printing, where CD
printing isn't enabled by default on american models. The i9900 lacks
these two features. Both printers are near as i'm aware discontinued
pending new models. The i9900 is to be replaced by the pro9000 (dye)
and pro9500 (pigment). See

I don't know what will replace the ip8500. The i9900 can be had easily
enough though places like newegg.com for about $425 shipped. The new
pro9000 may or may not be an improvement, the resolution according to
the website will be the same, drop size the same, nozzle count the
same, the ink however is the new chromalife100.
