I just received a new computer with windows XP loaded. There have been a few
people at the keyboard since I received it, and I'm not sure if something got
reset, or deleted, or whatever.

I keep geting the message:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Service has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The details provided with the message are:

"The following files will be included in this error report"

.....Temp\\WER8166.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
.....Temp\\WER8166.dir00\appcompat.txt

Is there anything I can do, short of re-installing XP?

I didn't see any similar questions, so my apologies if this is a redundant
query.

New computer = new computer warranty. Have you contacted the tech
support people at the computer supplier/manufacturer?

Do you get any additional information after you have submitted the
error report to Microsoft?

Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Expand the Event Viewer
category (click on the + sign) and browse through each of the
subcategories looking for error records whose date and time stamps
corresponds to your error messages. Double click on an error record
to see the details of that error.

Good luck
