I just bought for home use: huge, reputable manufacturer,
2.4 P3 processor, 512mb, Win2k Pro, Office2k Pro. Stand
alone set-up.
I have the same set up at work on a LAN. The work PC fires
like lightening. The home PC is SLOW!! i.e. I'll open
MSWord or Excel... 4 to 5 seconds to respond. Control
Panel and display properties each take about 20 second to
open.
The manufacturer says that this snail-pace is due to not
being on a LAN... (HUH??) I baffled by his response. How
do I speed this think up?

thanx

I would check start up software,
Norton, realplayer , any apple software, etc, etc.

One *major* help for me has been turning off display effects. If you go
to the Display Control Panel, hit the effects tab, and disable the first
check box (transition effects), it should have a noticeable effect on
your machine.

It should help a great deal. May not solve everything, but it's worth
doing.

HTH!
