I was told that I could send fax documents from my PC
without a fax machine. Is this true? Do I need a certain
software? I'd apreciate some help....

Fax software is included with Windows XP, what you need is an analog Fax
modem, preferably one listed in the Windows Hardware Compatibility list, and
a telephone line.
