Both are poor choices. 478 is on its way out. Go 939. As for the
CPU for 939, get whatever fits best to your budget. My choice would
be A64 X2 3800, or, budget permitting, 4800 - this one will wipe the
floor with anything Intel has to offer in 478 or 775 p)

The P4 3.2 is faster... The P4 3.4Ghz is faster... There's no
difference... it depends on what did you say you wanted the processor
for. Gaming? Compiling kernels? Surfing the internet?

Defintely the 3.4GHz. The 3.4GHz 0.5MB L2 model is a Northwood, it has the
advantage of shorter pipeline and lower power consumption ~70W. The 3.2GHz
1MB L2 model is a Prescott which has the slight disadvantage of a longer
pipeline and power consumption of ~90W. The larger cache only makes up for
the deficiencies at same GHz.

The two chips are actually much more different then they might appear.
The change in cache coincides with the change from the older
"Northwood" core P4 chips to the newer "Prescott" P4 chips. As such,
it makes generalizing a bit tough, though it is sufficient to say that
the two cores are going to perform at a VERY similar level, clock for
clock.

So, that being said, the 3.4GHz P4 will probably be (very) marginally
faster, though you're unlikely to notice the difference between the
two. If one chip is more than $10 cheaper then the other, I would
probably go for it. If they are within $10 of one another, I would go
for the 3.4GHz "Northwood" P4 with 512KB of cache. According to
www.pricewatch.com, the going rate for the 3.4GHz "Northwood" chip is
about $50 more than that of the 3.2GHz "Prescott" chip. In this
situation I would save the $50 and go for the latter.

Of course, that being said, the recommendation of others in this
newsgroup (to get a Socket 939 Athlon64 chip) is not a bad one at all,
as least if you're looking at buying a new motherboard to go along
with this new processor. Or if you're set on Intel chips, one of the
newer Socket 775 chips with 64-bit capabilities would be fine. Really
I would only consider either of the two chips you're looking at if
you've already got a Socket 478 motherboards that supports these chips
but currently has no processor in it (or perhaps a 2.0GHz chip or some
such thing). If you've got a P4 2.4GHz or faster chip already then
the upgrade probably isn't worthwhile, and if you need to buy a new
motherboard then Socket 939 would be your best bet, or Socket 775 (aka
"Socket T") if you insist on Intel chips.
