Over asked Understood need more help

The tech before me setup this network with the name of mycompany.com and I have an external website of www.mycompany.com. easy solve add a www pointer. Yeah I know keep reading please. The external webhost is a shared server so if I try to resolve off of the ip address it sends me nowhere. How do I get around this problem?
