Did you attempt to delete Outlook Express? If so, you may have deleted a
needed file. Was Outlook Express 6.0 installed properly when Outlook was
installed? If not, Outlook may need to be re-installed.

I am currently getting a similar message that said, "Cannot start Microsoft
Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 Express 4.01 or
greater. You can install Outlook Express by running IE5Setup.exe from the
IE5 folber located on you CD or through the Windows Update website."

I have XP with SP2 and IE6 but the other day my system was hit by something.
I run ZoneAlarm and Norton Antivirus plus spybot but for some reason the
system was not working correctly. I don't know if it was a virus or purely
pilot error on my part. I had to restart some DLLs to get ZoneAlarm running
again and Norton. The only known remaining problem I have is that I cannot
get my MS Office XP Outlook running.

I completely uninstalled Office XP, which includes Outlook and reinstalled,
but I still get the exact same error msg when I try and start Outlook. When
I right-click on the outlook ICON all the info seems to be correct. I use
yahoo as my email provider.

Any thoughts on what to do next? I was thinking of reinstalling Outlook
Express.

That would be my suggestion, as well. Be aware that Outlook Express is a
part of Windows XP and is not supposed to be able to be uninstalled.
However, I don't see the harm in a re-install, as it may fix something that
broke in OE.

Having the same problem. I have reloaded Outlook and all of Office XP.
Problem is still there I am running Express 6 also. I have defined it as my
default e-mail program and have set up an account and Express 6 seems to
work. What is it in the registry that tells my computer it is not installed?

For what it is worth I also noticed a file called WMI was corrupted. In the
end I had to re-install Windows XP because each step I took to correct the
problem got me further into a hole. I first tried to reinstall XP but
because I had already loaded SP2 I could not reload XP. I then slipstreamed
XP Home Edition and SP2 which allowed me to reinstall XP but then it seemed I
was missing a driver and that is when the fun began because my system was now
in a state where I could not go back and could not go forward.

So in the end i had to reformat the hard-drive reload XP and then load back
in all the data files and apps. Luckily I had backups, but it took a whole
weekend to fix.

Maybe there is a simple fix to the problem. Maybe my system problem was
different. You could just decide not to use Outlook, (Outlook express worked
and my other apps were running) but I felt that at least in the case of my
system that there were too many other odd little probems mainly dealing with
digital signatures of apps.

One thing I would recommend...Whatever you decide to do, back up your data
files and pst files. Because if you end up having to reformat your drive,
bye, bye data.

I am encountering the same problem as the rest of you. It started after I
installed SP2 of Windows XP. I used OE for mail. It never stopped working. I
use Outlook 2002 in order to back up the contacts from my mobile phone.
Synchronizing with the phone still works. I do not want to have to reinstall
windows just to be able to see my contacts on my computer.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
