I need a PST file reader or converter. I have tried a few but they all need
outlook to be installed. I do not have outlook installed on my laptop and
will not be back to the office real soon to open the file on my work
computer.

AFAIK, only Outlook can read a PST file.

That's true but the program is expensive if one wants to extract just a few messages from a PST file (~ US $44)

Problems like these can easily be solved using PST Walker. It doesn't need Outlook to be installed, and can do wonders with .pst files.
