Opening programs problem

When I click on most of my icons - Microsoft Word, Excel,
Encyclopedia Britannica, games - in fact al my loaded
software and nearly all my control panel icons including
user accounts I get the message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this acion. Create an association in the
Folder Options control panel.

It is really annoying what can I do?
