At work, I use two computers connected to a network (about 10 machines
connected through a switch with a Windows NT 3.5 domain controller).
One is a desktop machine running Windows 98 which has an HP Laserjet
Printer shared.
The other is a notebook computer, running Windows XP Pro SP2 and Norton
Internet Security 2006. The desktop machine is listed in the Trusted
zone in the Personal Firewall. I have a few share folders in the
notebook and access the files in these shared folders from the desktop.
The notebook and the desktop can see each other in the network places
and also use the shared resources. I very frequently encounter the
following problems:
1. When I access the files in notebook's shared folders from the
desktop, it takes a long time - even a small excel file might take
about a minute or two - to open. Browsing the shared folders from the
desktop is also very slow.
I have some old clipper applications and dbf files in the notebook's
shared folders. When run from the desktop, the clipper applications
take longer time to load. The notebook computer's Microsoft Management
Console -> Open files lists the application file in read access mode
one or two times. After a delay, the application runs. When the
application is running, MMC shows a dbf file open in read access mode
one or two times and the program stalls as it is trying to open that
file in read+write mode. When I disconnect the open file from MMC,
program execution continues smoothly.
It appears that whenever an application requests to open a file in the
shared folder, that file gets opened immediately in read mode at least
once or even twice; this delays the opening of the file in the
read+write access mode, and very often the application freezes
requiring the manual disconnection of the open file (either one or two
instances) from MMC.
2. From the notebook, the access to the shared printer in the desktop
is very slow. The desktop's shared printer is set as the default
printer in the notebook. When I explore the Printers and Faxes in the
notebook, the window freezes most of the times or it takes a few
minutes to show the contents. When I print to the shared printer, it
takes an unsually long time for the printing to commence. When I use
File -> Print command from say Microsoft word, the Print dialog box
remains frozen for quite some time and very frequently I have to end
the application from the Task Manager.
Netstat shows many connections between port 139 of the notebook and
various higher ports of the desktop in time_wait state.
However, the notebook can print immediately to a printer connected to
the server as well as to a network printer directly connected - both in
the same network.
I had installed Netbeui on the notebook, but have subsequently removed
it as it did not help resolve the problems listed above.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.
