I just got an older system with ME in it, and the IE was 5.5. MS says
critical update to IE 6. I download the file, run the .exe, and it goes into
installing, but 0%. It finally goes to 75%, then kicks me out saying that it
was unable to install, and I need to shut down other processes. So I tried
several times more with everything else disabled--including antivirus,
firewall, etc. Still no luck, still the same error message. I'm just about
to the point of saying the heck with it and just running Firefox.

Try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

X-post to WinME General.

Chances are that the previous owner installed IE6 SP1 and then reinstalled
WinME without having first uninstalled IE6 SP1.
