Offline network printer delay

I have 4 network printers (1 at home, 3 at university) and as I own a
laptop, I am often switching between the networks, so always some of
the printers are unavailible. When opening a printer selection dialog
box in almost any program, it freezes for >30 sec waiting for the
disconnected network printers to time out. Is there a way to fix it
WITHOUT deleting the printers? (I do use them sometimes, but I cannot
use my universities printer in my home net and vice-versa)

create a local fake print to LPT and set it as the default. Don't print to
the device and always select your printer from a list of connections
provided by the application.

Hi,
my default printer is not one of the network printers but a PDF virtual
printer.
