Office2007 "compatibility mode" screwing up formatting in Excel 20

I'm testing Office07 prior to officewide install (if I like it) and am having
issues when I access a 2003 xls file. The issue is that it drops formatting
- not complicated stuff but things like font size, centering, cell colors,
formats (date/currency etc etc). But only on recently changed material.
I've been wasting a lot of time trying to restore the file to it's earlier
form but every time I save and reopen a file - its screwed.

This is a pure vanilla file - 20 columns, no filters, or pivot tables - just
3 meg of data and a couple of add and subtract fields.

I'm running on XP Pro - and also have the beta version of OFFICE 10
installed but my system defaults to 07 when I open excel.

This issue predates the Beta install -

Could use some help here.
