Before installing XP on your computer, did you run the XP compatibility
program? It provides a report that lists any problem areas that might exist
with your computer hardware and hardware drivers. That way you would know in
advance as to what to expect.

As far as my own experience is concerned, I have upgraded two of my
computers from W98SE to Windows XP Pro (two separate licenses by the way).
In each case the compatibility program told me of possible problems, but the
only thing that really needed to be done was to download 2 or 3 updated
drivers. Once the installations were completed and the new drivers
installed, they both ran, and are running, without a hitch. They have been
installed for over a year now, and there has never been a need to re-format.
I've have yet to see the BSOD on either machine.

One of my computers includes an AMD 950 MHZ CPU, 512 MB of RAM, and a 40 GB
HD. The other machine uses an AMD 1.3 GHZ CPU, 384 MB of RAM, and an 80 GB
HD. Both machines have adequate video cards with 64 MB of onboard RAM, and
the high-animation games my grandkids bring over always seem to work

I frequently check for, and download, Windows Updates, and I also run
antivirus and antispyware software.

From all reports I have seen, going back to ME would be a mistake.

Good luck.

Are you trolling? No machine requires "a format and reinstall about once
every 2 or 3 months" unless you have no idea what you're doing and are
trashing the system. No "Network Specialist" would view sitting in front of
your PC to update an operating system as terribly onerous nor updating a
video driver as a major challenge. XP is vastly superior to ME. If you
installed it as an upgrade to an ME machine full of viruses, spyware, or
other problems it could be problematic. I suggest you seek some competent
help to get your PC set up correctly and give you some training in ongoing
maintenance.

As a WindowsME user everyone kept telling me to upgrade to WindowsXP and
asking why on earth I still bothered with ME. I've got an AMD Athlon XP2000+
512M memory, 5 USB devices, DVD and CDRW writers. The software I mainly use
on this machine is Visual Studio 6.0, Outlook 2000 and Ulead Media Studio
Pro Video editor.

My WindowME machine would require a format and reinstall about once every 2
or 3 months, so I finally decided to upgrade to WindowsXP.

On the box it said 1.5G disk space require, so I already had a 2G partition
and all my applications where installed on another drive. After 2 days my 2G
partition was full so had to repartition my PC and now it has a 5G
partition.

The interactive install was a pain because it meant that I had to sit in
front of my PC for half an hour. Watching paint dry would have been more
exciting.

Detected my ATI Rage Pro 128 Ultra graphics card but installed the wrong
drive.

Have managed to disable all the CPU intensive graphical effects which seemed
to even slow down my 2GHz machine.

My PC seems to for ever require reboots after downloading and installing
critical updates. Luckily I've got broadband, don't know what I would have
done if was still connected on my old 56k modem. Visual Studio has crashed,
Media Studio has crashed, Outlook is very slow and has also crashed, all of
them wanting to send information to Microsoft and who knows if they bother
to read them.

I am by no means a computer novice and my profession is a Network
Specialist and I install and configure OS's from Win95 -Win2K and FreeBSD,
Linux, IRIX, Solaris and HPUX as part of my job.

Am very tempted to go back to WindowsME. Would like to know if anyone has
had similar problems and also any success stories.

I have installed XP Pro on 2 machines(separate licenses) with no problem I
could ever blame on XP, except for 1 device driver I took from WUD. The 1st
was with an AMD XP 1700+. I bought XP in Feb. after it was released in Oct.
My current machine in running on a P4 3.2.

Both installs were, however, clean installs. Comparing your experience to
mine, and posts in the NG's, I would have to believe, either you upgraded to
an OS that already had unresolved problems or you have some XP
non-compatible hardware or software.

Note, I am only a PC hobbyist so, my success is not due to my superior
knowledge. Since you object to even installing a driver, I know you won't
like my suggestion, but here it is; Make sure all of your hardware is XP
compatible and do a clean install of XP.

Those Error Reports provide real information about what may be wrong even if
you cannot figure out what they mean. Post some and see what others make of
them!

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure
this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every Error
Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A workaround is
copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off the
copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Being a network specialist, and having to configure many computers, you mean
to tell everyone here that you have never worked with a computer that had
Windows XP installed upon it?

I would tend to doubt that a network specialist has never seen the operating
system, and had a chance to work with it. Given that doubt, I also will say
that you know what the system is capable of, under varying configurations.

That being the case, you just screwed up in installing XP onto your own
computer.

Guess you better go back to WinME (-:

You say you're an IT specialist, and you installed XP on a 2gig partition?
And presumably you didn't modify the location temp variables, the browser
cache or the swapfile either. And you were having to hosedown and
reinstall Windows Me on this same box every 2 to 3 weeks due to stability
problems? As an IT specialist, if any OS did this would it not indicate some
deeper hardware related issues?

Other than the initial Windows setup info, and entering the Product Key,
language preferences, etc, there's no need to sit in front of the box the
entire time install.

The product introduction announcement date from ATI for this card was
September 8th, 1998. That's 6 years ago. And you're blaming XP for slow
graphics? I can assure you that an 5 generation old video card on a P4 EE
3.4 will net the same results.

The initial series of updates after an install is the only time this is an
issue. Windows Update rarely needs a reboot for security patches downloaded
thereafter.

For someone who's allegedy conversant with Win 2000 installation and
configurtion the oversights and judgement errors are not good.

But he's a "network specialist"! Works with computers everyday for a living.

America - Land of Outsourcing, Staff Meetings, spending hours
programming the next "Earth Shatteringly Important Meeting"

impressive
