Non Networking with XP Home

I am trying to set up a simple connection between my desktop machine
and the laptop. Doesn't sound like brain surgery but...
Each machine has access to the Internet independently. I have run the
Network Setup Wizard but none of the examples are for connecting two
machines, ICS & the Internet are involved in all of them.
Each machine is XP Home. Each have a name, both have the same
workgroup name. Each have the following:

IClient for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
and the other setting in the properties dialog box are indentical.

I am using a known good crossover cable. When I work my way down from
Entire Network to MSHome I get:
Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thank you.
David

Turn off the firewall on both computers.

This will fix it and they will both see each other

The problem I am having is how to activate the firewall
and both of the computer seeing each other.

If you figure this out let me know

It isn't possible for the computers to see each other if you activate
XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall. As its name implies, it
was designed for use only on a direct (modem) connection to the
Internet.

Commercial firewall programs have options to allow access by computers
on the local area network while blocking access by all others.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to say it in the original post, but
both MS firewall and ZoneAlarm have been turned off.

Will work through the links.

Don't just turn off ZoneAlarm. Un-install it, using the un-install
procedure provided by the manufacturer. Then, go to Start | Run |
Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of ZA.

Don't install it again until everything is working.
