When that takes place,& after cleaning up the hd/OS temp files,etc,install
xp cd (this alone can restore desktop),open task mgr,new task,type:cmd
In cmd type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
type:EXIT Remove xp cd,restart pc.
