WMP is very good but, you do have to tweak it a bit. First, use the
classic skin and get rid of the "anchor". Second, cripple the update
"feature" like so:
"1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
2. Add Key name WindowsMediaPlayer.
3. Select the WindowsMediaPlayer key and Add Value name
DisableAutoUpdate, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to
1."
Third, uncheck uniquely indentify, attempt to aquire licenses and
enable personal rights management in options but, leave enable
automatic codec download checked. Lastly, install the WMP9 codecs:

You end up with a very capable player that will play all Windows media
in Mozilla/Firefox. Okay, so Redmond won't exactly love you but,
that's a good thing, right? ;-)
