Windows Media Player 10 Preview has been released.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx

Well, it IS free - in a sell yourself to the devil sort of way. Kyle
Bennet over at [Hard|OCP summed it up pretty well:

"If I remember correctly, the last time I hosed my box it was from a
lame-duck Media Player 9 beta install. Set your restore points, back
up your files…Microsoft is on the loose folks!"

WMP is cr*p since ver 7. I decided to stick with ye olde 6.4 version. Works like
a charm.

WMP is very good but, you do have to tweak it a bit. First, use the
classic skin and get rid of the "anchor". Second, cripple the update
"feature" like so:

"1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

2. Add Key name WindowsMediaPlayer.

3. Select the WindowsMediaPlayer key and Add Value name
DisableAutoUpdate, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to
1."

Third, uncheck uniquely indentify, attempt to aquire licenses and
enable personal rights management in options but, leave enable
automatic codec download checked. Lastly, install the WMP9 codecs:
http://www.soft32.com/download_2592.html

You end up with a very capable player that will play all Windows media
in Mozilla/Firefox. Okay, so Redmond won't exactly love you but,
that's a good thing, right? ;-)

A "monkeyman", an "Anti_Freak_Machine" and a "Chaos Master" join forces
to warn us against the EVIL Microsoft! They are... "THE MAC LEAGUE"!
Meanwhile, back on Earth, several million people continue to use
Microsoft products, oblivious to the damage they are causing to
themselves and the environment.

Next month...
The MAC League join forces with The Brotherhood of Linux to crush the
EVIL Microsoft Empire!
You don't want to miss it!

That should be "WMP7 is very good but,". Sorry about that, I got a bit
ahead of myself.

Nah...far from it. Just admiring the subject line

*goes back to playing minesweeper* for Windows.

Balogna. The machine I use the most is a Pentium M Win2K box. It's
just fantastic once I've messed with Registry a bit. I also have
Win98SE, MSDOS/ Windows For Workgroups and Windows NT4 machines along
with Mac G4 Jaguar, SUN Sparc Solaris and AMD64 Debian LINUX IA-64
boxes, as well. I love computers and I'm usually pretty happy, no
matter what I have to use to get a job done.

Another Windows user putting down Linux? You don't see Linux people
'here' touting their various systems as the end all.
Don't polarize the group "Downer-Freak".
As two-faced Bob "Chet" Atkins said, "What good is it if you don't have
fun?". Once is fun. Twice you are an asshole.
Believe me Pal, You are an asshole.
I have just ended your end of the discussion.
