I was looking for a utility that will identify the operating system a
server is running when visited. I didn't find it yet, but I did come
across this site that has many programs I've not heard of:

When visited? You mean like a telnet or http query?
Not sure what you mean by visited...

I wasn't quite sure how to phrase the description of the utility I was
looking for. I did find it. It is a Steve Gibson utility that accepts
a URL and normally returns the server and version of that site. Many
government sites are now blocking this info, good for them!

I'm going to do a report on information technology and security. I'm
surprised to find many online banks and large corporations that
contain private information on servers running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 or
4.0.

I've only just started getting an idea of who runs what. I see the
above listed as highly exploited, along with the OS, IE, etc.

You might also want to look at nmap (there is a windows version):

A few weeks ago I watched a TV program
about Internet Security on PBS
that was very interesting ....

I haven't browsed the following on-line PBS info
related to the program, but it might provide
a few useful clues ....
