New VPN connection -- now creates only dialup connections

I have a laptop running XP SP2, on which I run Microsoft Update
manually every other month. Last Friday I ran MSUpdate, and my VPN
connection to my company office stopped working.

Intrigued, I deleted the connection and tried recreating it. The "New
Connection" wizard created a new connection, but it would only create
a *dialup* VPN connection using the built-in modem (which has never
been used in the laptop's two-year life). The wizard completely
ignores the (working) LAN and wireless network connections.

I've checked the order of connections, disabled the modem device, and
tried some other stuff that I'm too tired and frustrated to remember
right now. Nothing has worked.

Any ideas how to convince the New Connection wizard to choose the
right connection for VPN?
