I would like to add a new child domain (ex. child.mydomain.com) but I'm
not secure on how to configure the DNS.
The DNS is installed on the parent DC (srv01.mydomain.com), how I mus
setup it to resolve the names of hosts in the child domain?

All members of the child domain by default will have the child domain's DNS
name as the Primary DNS suffix which adds the child domain's DNS suffix to
the DNS suffix search list in addition to the parent DNS suffix.
Members of the parent domain use the parent domain as the primary DNS suffix
and have only the parent DNS suffix in the DNS suffix search list. There are
a couple of ways to add the child DNS suffix to the DNS suffix search list
on parent domain members.
1. Make the child domain suffix the Connection specific DNS suffix on the
parent domain members. This can be done using DHCP option 015 on the DHCP
clients.
2. Create a custom DNS suffix search list with both the child and parent DNS
suffixes in the list. This can be done in a group policy:
Computer Configuration
-Administrative templates
-Network
-DNS Client

Hi

the following article explains well how to configure DNS when adding a child
domain. Once setup queries for hosts in the child domain will use the NS
records in the delegated zone to locate the authorative DNS server for the
child domain

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255248
How To Create a Child Domain in Active Directory and Delegate the DNS
Namespace to the Child Domain

Kevin, is it neccessary to add the suffix of the child domain to the parent
if there is a delegated zone in place? just for my own info

Regards

Si

Absolutely, if you want that domain searched for hosts, without the DNS
suffix search list having the child domain in it, only the parent will be
searched.
